What Do Parish Councils Do?
Parish councils are the first tier of local government, with real influence over the wellbeing of their communities. Their work includes:
· Delivering local services (e.g. parks, community buildings, events)
· Improving quality of life for residents
· Giving communities a democratic voice
Why Become a Councillor?
Councillors are community leaders. They help shape decisions, represent residents, and make a real difference locally. As a councillor, you’ll:
· Make decisions on local priorities and spending
· Monitor council activities and ensure transparency
· Get involved in projects, consultations, and community events
You don’t need any special qualifications—just a commitment to your community and a willingness to listen, learn, and lead.
Who Can Stand for Election or Co-option?
You’re eligible if you:
· Are a UK, Commonwealth, Irish, or qualifying EU citizen
· Are at least 18 years old
· AND meet one of the following:
o Are registered to vote in the parish
o Have lived in the parish (or within 3 miles) for the past 12 months
o Have worked in the parish during the past 12 months
o Have owned or rented land/premises in the parish during the past 12 months
